Canada’s network of university-based entrepreneurship programs is entering a new stage as the Lab2Market initiative expands into a coordinated national framework. By 2025, the network will reach more than fifty postsecondary institutions across every region, creating shared pathways for researchers who want to test the commercial and social value of their discoveries. Each hub will connect academic teams with mentors, regional investors, and early customers, forming a more consistent route from campus labs to the country’s emerging innovation economy. This evolution reflects a broader shift in Canadian research culture. Universities and colleges are increasingly expected not only to generate knowledge but also to demonstrate outcomes that feed into new companies, public services, and technologies. The national approach is designed to reduce regional gaps, allowing ideas from smaller or remote centres to reach the same development opportunities as those in major cities. For policymakers, it represents a chance to track how public research funding translates into measurable impact. For individual researchers, the change offers something more tangible: a defined structure for moving from discovery to validation and eventual revenue. Programs now emphasize team formation, intellectual property training, and access to early-stage capital. The Canadian Foundation for Innovation and Research, CFIR, connects with this pipeline through complementary scholarships, research grants, and seed funding. Together, these supports help align academic ambition with the practical demands of starting a business in Canada’s competitive innovation landscape. Still, challenges remain. Many new founders emerge from science rather than commerce and must learn unfamiliar disciplines as their projects grow. National coordination of Lab2Market hubs is a step toward easing that transition—building confidence, consistency, and a stronger sense that Canadian research can scale beyond the laboratory.
